L’analisi della ricezione del motivo hoffmanniano dell’automa all’interno dell’opera di Walter Benjamin costituisce l’occasione per studiare da vicino come il materialismo dell’autore della Passagenarbeit sia contaminato da schegge romantiche e per approfondire la complessa architettura di fonti che compone il suo «marxismo gotico». L’orrore suscitato dai «giochi di prestigio meccanici» che attraversa la produzione hoffmanniana, infatti, lungi dal risolversi in un esercizio letterario volto a creare un mondo fantastico avulso dalla prosaicità della vita quotidiana, dà voce, invece, alla disperata reazione di fronte alla progressiva reificazione delle relazioni e della creatività umane e alla minaccia dello sfaldamento dei confini fra essere umano e macchina prodotti dall’incedere della fagocitante logica del profitto. L’utilizzo astuto delle fonti e il lungo apprendistato presso la scuola della dialettica marxiana permettono, tuttavia, a Benjamin di rovesciare il tema dell’automa in una potente critica dell’uso capitalistico della tecnica e di sprigionare il potenziale rivoluzionario in essa contenuto.

The analysis of the reception of the Hoffmannian automaton motif within Walter Benjamin's work provides an opportunity to closely study how the materialism of the author of the Passagenarbeit is contaminated by romantic splinters and to delve into the complex architecture of sources that make up his «Gothic Marxism». The horror aroused by the «mechanical conjuring tricks» that runs through Hoffmann's production, in fact, far from resolving itself in a literary exercise aimed at creating a fantasy world detached from the prosaic nature of everyday life, gives voice, instead, to the desperate reaction in the face of the progressive reification of human relations and creativity and the threat of the breaking down of the boundaries between human being and machine produced by the advancing phagocytising logic of profit. The astute use of the sources and the long apprenticeship at the school of Marxian dialectics allow Benjamin, however, to overturn the theme of automaton into a powerful critique of the capitalist use of technology and to unleash the revolutionary potential it contains.
