In questo saggio abbiamo voluto far emergere dalle pagine di uno dei primi romanzi calviniani (risalente al 1952) la questione metafisica per eccellenza: quella relativa al rapporto parte-tutto. Facendo vedere come Calvino, da scrittore, riesca a mettere in opera un radicale rovesciamento della prospettiva hegeliana (valevole come la più radicale espressione del mainstream filosofico occidentale): mostrandoci come ignorante e ottusa sia l’interezza, e non la parte. Una parte evidentemente mostruosa rispetto all’integrità dell’intero; ma che è nulla rispetto all’essenziale mostruosità che caratterizza ogni forma integra, compiuta, e non mancante di nulla… tuttavia fondamentalmente “stupida”, cioè sempre confusa e incapace di distinguere, e quindi di conoscere secondo i principi della “chiarezza” e della “distinzione”. Insomma, abbiamo voluto far emergere l’eversiva istanza filosofica custodita da un romanzo troppo a lungo considerato come semplice metafora del “contemporaneo”.

In this essay we wanted to bring out from the pages of one of Calvin's first novels (dating back to 1952) the metaphysical question par excellence: that relating to the part-whole relationship. Showing how Calvino, as a writer, manages to implement a radical reversal of the Hegelian perspective (valid as the most radical expression of the Western philosophical mainstream): showing us how ignorant and obtuse is the whole, and not the part. An evidently monstrous part compared to the integrity of the whole; but which is nothing compared to the essential monstrosity that characterizes every integral, complete form, lacking nothing… but fundamentally “stupid”, that is always confused and incapable of distinguishing, and therefore of knowing according to the principles of “clarity” and “distinction”. In short, we wanted to bring out the subversive philosophical instance guarded by a novel that has been considered for too long as a simple metaphor of the “contemporary”.
