Il “mostruoso” costituisce una categoria universale della narrativa. Le storie sono popolate di creature che eccedono i limiti dell’esperienza ordinaria e la mettono in questione. Ciò non vale solo per la forma narrativa più antica e universalmente diffusa nelle culture umane, quella esemplificata nelle forme semplici della favola, delle storielle, dell’epos, del mito e dell’aneddoto. Il mostruoso fa capolino anche nelle finzioni schiettamente moderne e secolarizzate dei romanzi. Nel presente contributo ci interrogheremo sulla funzione narrativa del mostruoso prendendo in esame, in particolare, i modi narrativi del mito, della favola e del romanzo, seguendo rispettivamente la teoria del mito di Hans Blumenberg, il saggio di Walter Benjamin sul narratore e infine la teoria del romanzo di Michail Bachtin, le quali ci permetteranno di mettere in luce tre diverse funzioni del «mostruoso» nella narrativa occidentale: distanza, superamento e critica.

The “monstrous” constitutes a universal category of fiction. Stories are populated with creatures that exceed the limits of ordinary experience and call it into question. This does not only apply to the oldest and most universally widespread narrative form in human cultures, the one exemplified in the simple forms of fable, stories, epos, myth and anecdote. The monstrous also peeps out in the overtly modern and secularised fictions of novels. In this contribution, we will question the narrative function of the monstrous by examining, in particular, the narrative modes of myth, fable and novel, following respectively Hans Blumenberg’s theory of myth, Walter Benjamin’s essay on the narrator and finally Michail Bachtin’s theory of the novel. These will allow us to highlight three different functions of the “monstrous” in Western fiction that are closely linked: distance, overcoming and critique.
