Nel mio articolo considero The Handkerchief, un racconto che Benjamin scrisse nel 1932, come un testo che condensa in forma letteraria alcuni aspetti centrali dell’emergere dell’immagine dialettica. Ritengo che il racconto evidenzi un importante contrasto tra l’infinità della riflessione, caratteristica della critica romantica, e l’immagine, in cui tutti gli elementi del racconto nel suo svolgersi temporale sono riordinati, e il contenuto di verità è riconosciuto nel suo carattere sorprendente. Molti altri temi del pensiero di Benjamin vi sono concentrati e fanno parte dello svolgersi dialettico del racconto: la natura del declino della narrazione, il carattere velato del bello, così come il fatto chela verità – si può dire – rende giustizia alla bellezza proprio nel distruggere il suo presentarsi come un tutto in sé conchiuso.

In my paper I consider a short story that Benjamin wrote in 1932, The Handkerchief, as encapsulating in a literary form some central aspects of the emergence of a dialectical image. I take the tale to bring out an important contrast between the infinite reflection characteristic of Romantic Critique and the image in which all the elements of the telling in time are re-ordered and the striking truth content is recognized. Several other themes in Benjamin’s thought are concentrated and form part of the dialectical unfolding of the tale, such as the nature of the decline of storytelling, the veiled character of the beautiful, as well as the way in which truth can be said to do justice to beauty, at the same time as its destroys its presentation as a self-enclosed whole.
