The basic idea that something has to remain hidden in the meaning of human relationships is contained in the thought of Gregory Bateson and Niklas Luhmann. In this paper we try to explore the entailments of this point with regard to Plato’s “unwritten doctrines”. Some consequences for the psychological analysis of moral life are discussed.
