In questo saggio metto a confronto alcune cose che Wittgenstein dice nella sua Prefazione al Tractatus logico-philosophicus con le indicazioni di lettura che nelle sue lettere egli dà a Ludwig von Ficker. In particolare, cerco di chiarire che cosa intende Wittgenstein quando scrive a von Ficker che il suo «lavoro è rigorosamente filosofico e insieme letterario, ma comunque in esso non si chiacchiera» e argomento che quello che qui Wittgenstein dice a von Ficker è una importante chiave di lettura del Tractatus. Su questo sfondo cerco anche di spiegare che cosa Wittgenstein intende quando nella Prefazione scrive che il valore del suo libro consiste, innanzitutto, nel fatto «che in esso sono espressi pensieri». Mi chiedo, inoltre, in che senso Wittgenstein parli nella Prefazione dei «pensieri» e della loro «verità» e come questo si accordi con l’uso che ne viene fatto all’interno del libro.

In this essay I compare some of the things that Wittgenstein says in his Preface to the Tractatus logico-philosophicus with the suggestions for reading that he gives to Ludwig von Ficker in his letters. In particular, I try to clarify what Wittgenstein means when he writes to von Ficker that his «work is strictly philosophical and, at the same time, literary, but there is no babbling in it» and I try to show that what Wittgenstein says here to von Ficker is an important key to the understanding of the Tractatus. Against this background I also try to explain what Wittgenstein means when, in the Preface, he writes that the value of his book consists firstly in the fact «that in it thoughts are expressed». I also ask myself in what sense Wittgenstein speaks in the Preface of «thoughts» and of their «truth» and how this accords with the use of these notions within the book.
