Il genere horror e i mostri che lo popolano sembrano dotati di una particolare forza e resilienza che li rende costantemente attuali. Sembra che la civiltà contemporanea non possa chiudere definitivamente con la sfera del mostruoso. Ispirandosi al film Come fare un mostro e parafrasandone il titolo, il presente contributo si propone d’indagare le motivazioni che si celano dietro tale fenomeno. Di particolare utilità si rivela la filosofia di Luigi Pareyson, il quale ha sviluppato un’ontologia della libertà che si lascia sviluppare anche come ontologia del male. Traendo spunto dalla necessità indicata da Pareyson di ricorrere al mito per poter adeguatamente affrontare la questione del male e dall’insistenza con la quale egli ne sottolinea la dimensione ontologica, l’articolo intende sviluppare il pensiero tragico pareysoniano nel contesto del genere horror e dei suoi mostri. Seguendo tale via, il contributo giunge alla conclusione che il mostro e l’horror godono di simili successo e resilienza grazie alla loro capacità di attualizzare il mito e di mostrarsi come luogo di un’ipostatizzazione estetica dell’ontologia del male.

The horror genre and the monsters that populate it seem endowed with a particular strength and resilience that makes them constantly relevant. It seems that contemporary society cannot definitively close with the sphere of the monstrous. Inspired by the film How to Make a Monster and paraphrasing its title, this contribution aims to investigate the motivations behind this phenomenon. The philosophy of Luigi Pareyson is particularly useful, as he developed an ontology of freedom that can also be developed as an ontology of evil. Drawing inspiration from the need indicated by Pareyson to resort to myth in order to adequately address the question of evil and from the insistence with which he underlines its ontological dimension, the article intends to develop Pareysonian tragic thought in the context of the horror genre and its monsters. Following this path, the contribution reaches the conclusion that the monster and horror enjoy similar success and resilience thanks to their ability to actualize the myth and to show themselves as a place of an aesthetic hypostatization of the ontology of evil.
